Coaching

Whether you are just beginning to explore the world of exercising regularly or have been highly a highly competitive endurance athlete for years, Fuel can help you reach your potential. I have worked with beginners and very experienced athletes alike and both ends of the spectrum are very familiar. Regardless of experience, most endurance athletes share the same basic desire and mental courage to better themselves. This is a major reason why I love working with them.

Training for endurance sport is a varying mixture of science, art, and attitude. Fuel can provide the sound scientific principles behind training and help you master the art of tailoring those principles into your life. This combined with a positive mental attitude completes your recipe for success.

My scholastic research and (mostly) my experience has convinced me that certain principles must be employed to reach your potential. These principles make up the pillars of my training and coaching philosophy:

Consistency
Respect for recovery
Unwavering self belief
Every workout having a purpose

Fitting sport into the rest of your life

As simple as these principles sound, they are not easy to live by.  Most training mistakes I've made result from a deviation in one of those principles. Fuel can help you avoid such pitfalls.

Fuel does not offer one standard coaching protocol for athletes to fit into. Each athlete-coach relationship is tailored to meet the athlete's specific goals, experience, and other life-commitments.  Your unique protocol will be established after an orientation interview.  All Fuel coaching includes varying degrees of the following components:

Clear documentation of goals and time available for training
Carefully periodized monthly/yearly training plans
Fine-tuned weekly training plans (specified frequency, duration, intensity)
Clear determination of each workout's purpose
Sport-specific technical and equipment advice
Research-based nutrition advice for training, racing, recovery, and the off-season
Attention to mental barriers that may be problematic

Sport specialties

Triathlon
Training for three sports at once is by no means easy and requires careful organization, otherwise time and energy you don't have will be wasted. Regardless of your skill level Fuel can help prepare you to "tri-all-three" as safely and efficiently as possible. Triathlon training is extremely individualized and depends on numerous variables including experience, goals, strengths, weakness, life-situation, and even genetics. Fuel will optimize your elusive and unique mix of those variables to win for you.

Swimming
Whether you are casually swimming for fitness but want to make it easier, or you are a triathlete striving for a faster swim split, Fuel can help. I firmly believe that becoming a proficient swimmer does not come out of training "hard", rather it comes from training "smart". I learned this the hard way but learned it well. Smart swim training comes from learning technique, period. Proper technique is based on "fishlike" body position, and is not intuitive to humans. I can teach swimmers the principles, techniques, and drills necessary to learn this method of efficient swimming. The net effect is you will become faster with less effort.

Cycling
Fuel can assist your cycling goals whether they involve the upcoming cyclocross season, a recreational bike tour, or even making the podium at a stage road race. Becoming a better cyclist possesses the unique challenge of its significant time demands. Fuel can ensure that precious time in the saddle is not wasted. Cycling is very "technical" and I can offer you advice on proper bike-fit, pedaling mechanics, body position, fueling, riding in groups, bike maintenance, and endless other nuance's that we may read about in a book but often don't apply.

Running
If you are looking for a personal record at an upcoming marathon, 10K cross-country event, or just want explore running for fitness for the first time, Fuel can help. Most runners devote quite a bit of their heart and soul into the sport and Fuel is looking to ensure that your investment is maximized. I have considered endless issues in my running career such as the best clothing to wear during long runs, all the way to how low my heart rate gets between mile repeats on the track. I emphasize tremendous vigilance in injury prevention in all sports, but especially in running since the potential is so great. I have come to believe that running injuries are usually not "just part of it the sport", but are usually signs of improper training.

Stretching/strengthening
Although not "endurance sports", Fuel believes in the utility of these supplements to your training.  Fuel can teach you stretch routines lasting anywhere from 10 minutes to over an hour that are specific to your sport and problem areas. I believe that the benefits from stretching are best conferred through careful mindfulness to what you are doing; easier said than done! I have found regular stretching positively supports my physical capabilities and offers a welcome bit of quiet time in the day to relax and reflect.

For endurance athletes, strengthening the "core" (abdomen, back) muscles offers indisputable benefits. A small investment in some simple exercises you can do at home is an easy way to prolong fatigue-onset in your sports. Fuel can teach you an individualized program that will take about 15 minutes a day.

Fuel is also a proponent of off-season weight training for endurance athletes, especially those who are in their thirties and beyond. I can design an individualized sport-specific gym program that will offer a welcome boost to your upcoming sport season.
